Instrument Repair Specialist - Clovis Unified School District - Clovis, CA - 4.16.26

Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Visual and Performing Arts, the Instrument Repair Specialist performs evaluation, repairs, setups, maintenance, and distribution of brass, wind, string, and percussion instruments to student musicians, and performs related work as required. This position provides the school community with support in providing a quality arts program that directly supports student learning and achievement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cares for and maintains tools, equipment, and shop areas.
  • Communicates with other departments, students, staff, and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues; performs emergency instrumental repairs as requested.
  • Dismantles and reassembles musical instruments; removes keys, rods, corks, pads, and valves; cleans keys, hinges, tubes, rods, and bodies of instruments; replaces and fits keys, pads, cork felts, and heads; aligns valves and straightens slides; resets bridges and repairs bows; determines salvageability of damaged instruments; creates new parts for obsolete instruments.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies, and orders replacement inventory when necessary.
  • Maintains records, provides reports, and records work data; utilizes an online inventory management system to ensure the availability of sufficient inventory and keeps track of assets. Operates within a defined budget.
  • Maintains work site and storage areas in a clean and orderly condition, protecting building occupants from work site hazards.
  • May participate in or provide services for production areas beyond instrument repair, including the operation of production equipment during production.
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in connection with the maintenance, repair, and improvement of musical instruments and equipment, including a variety of brass, woodwind, string, and percussion instruments and cases.
  • Picks up and delivers instruments to various locations.
  • Provides guidance to students and staff regarding the proper operation, care, and storage of instruments; serves as a resource to district staff, students, and others regarding instruments and instrument repair.
  • Removes dents; chemically cleans brass and woodwind instruments, including acid washings; polishes and buffs instruments.
  • Uses standardized industry procedures.
  • Sanitizes instruments after use so they can be distributed to new students.
  • Supervises and schedules non-contracted staff, including students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials, tools, and equipment common to the servicing and repair of musical instruments. Safety practices and procedures. Current policies, laws, and procedures of the District. Principles and practices in brass, woodwind, string, and percussion musical instrument repair. Operation of a variety of hand and power tools. Chemicals used in cleaning instruments.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES TO: Support performance by multiple programs throughout the school year. Learn, interpret, explain, and apply knowledge of District and department organization, operations, programs, and functions. Apply independent judgment and discretion in coordination with limited facilities. Work with staff in stressful or high-pressure situations created by strict deadlines. Teach and instruct others. Ensure that safety is a priority. Proficiently play brass, string, percussion, or woodwind instrument. Build harmony among team members and convey aesthetic concepts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Requires a bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in instrument repair or related experience. Additional experience may substitute for some higher education.

LICENSE(S) and CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Valid current California Driver's License. Completion of a certified instrument repair program or equivalent is preferred but not required. Pass the District's applicable proficiency exam for the job class with a satisfactory score.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is performed indoors in a shop environment and occasionally outdoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor and working with or in the vicinity of electrical connections and tools. Stand for extended periods of time and walk up to 100 yards. Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Lift, carry, push or pull heavy objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. Climb (e.g. ladders), stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis. Hand-eye coordination. Hand and finger dexterity include ability to grasp and operate shop equipment, and calibrate instruments and dials. Auditory ability to hear and discern operating levels from equipment. Near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, notice moving objects, observe work in progress, and view production displays. Speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations.

Young-at-heart elderly woman in Alma, WI (approx 25mi from Winona) seeks in-home caregivers/companions.

My mom, Lorena, 83, lives with her cat in a lovely split level house next to the river. (Great views!)

Her needs include: giving medication, treating OA of shoulders with topical creams, assistance via a gait belt up and down 6 steps; moderate assistance dressing and bathing, occasional assistance with incontinence, simple meal prep, going for walks, doing easy in-home PT exercises.

Her hobbies, which she'll welcome you to join include: chatting, gardening, sewing, baking and watching the birds. She's cognizant, oriented to time and place though forgetful, and has a good sense of humor.
Lorena requires 24/7 care (nights are easy since she rarely gets up) so it will take a team to cover her needs. Shifts and days can vary so if interested please call me and we'll talk about it!

The Role
We’re looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Setup & Repair Technician to join our Peachtree City team. You’ll be the hands-on expert responsible for keeping instruments playing their best — from student rentals coming back off the road to
fine instruments deserving careful attention.  Please note: This position is based in Peachtree City, GA. Candidates outside the area will be expected to relocate prior to or shortly after hire. Some relocation assistance will be provided.

What You’ll Do
  • Perform professional setups on violin, viola, cello, and bass (nut and saddle fitting, bridge fitting and carving, soundpost adjustment, fingerboard planing, peg fitting)
  • Inspect, assess, and repair instruments from our rental fleet and customer-owned instruments
  • Rehair and repair bows across the violin family
  • Evaluate incoming instruments for quality, condition, and resale value
  • Communicate repair estimates and timelines clearly with customers and staff
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient shop workspace
  • Assist with instrument and accessory sales as needed
What We’re Looking For
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in violin family setup and repair
  • Proficiency in bow rehair is strongly preferred
  • Formal luthiery training is a plus
  • Strong eye for detail and genuine care for instrument quality
  • Ability to work independently and manage a repair queue efficiently
  • Good communication skills — you’ll interact with customers and staff regularly
  • Experience in a retail music shop environment is a plus

Paige’s Music is looking for a String Repair Prep Associate to join our repair team! We are looking to hire someone to help repair and maintain our student string instrument rental stock, with the possibility for advancement into customer repair. This position is full-time with benefits and includes vacation and holiday pay, medical insurance, and a 401k plan. Paige’s Music is in Fishers, Indiana in our new facility and has been in business since 1871. Although we are a large music store, our organization has a definite family atmosphere, and we have a great staff.

Job Summary:


The String Repair Prep Associate is responsible for repairing and maintaining stock inventory of string family instruments.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Repair and maintain all stock inventory of string instruments and cases.
  • Wipe-up instruments and cases after repaired.
  • Assist in triage of incoming string instruments.
  • Repair any customer string instruments assigned by the String Department Coordinator.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Basic proficiency in string instrument repair techniques.
  • Experience with basic shop machinery and power tools.
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Education and Experience:
  • Graduate from accredited instrument repair program or equivalent apprenticeship preferred
  • May consider candidates with no formal training with 2-3 years experience in string repair.
Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting large instruments up to 50lbs
  • Extended periods of standing for some repairs

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Travel to customer sites (up to 22 weeks/year) across the U.S. This travel is by air.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on industrial inkjet printers and production line equipment (presses, laminators, heaters, etc.)
  • While on-site at Mendota Heights, MN location: Service and troubleshoot equipment. Handle customer support calls
  • Supporting team that is in the field.
  • Manage your travel itinerary, customer communication and schedule.
  • Work on process improvement, documentation and lab testing while not traveling.
Required Skills:

  • 3+ years of hardware experience.
  • 3+ years electronic and electrical troubleshooting
  • Very Strong mechanical skills.
  • Bonus to have hands on experience with PLC and HMI programming.
Soft Skills:
