Study repair and maintenance of violin family instruments — violin, viola, cello and bass — as well as bow repair and rehairing.

In the Violin Repair and Making program at Minnesota State College Southeast in Red Wing, you will learn the use of hand and power tools, materials used in the trade and their characteristics, and how to implement them in the repair and maintenance of violin family instruments.

The Violin Repair diploma at Minnesota State College Southeast is unique in that it is structured for an entire academic year. Our students refine their skills by repeating many different repair processes multiple times over the course of their study at Southeast.

Deepen your understanding of the violin by enrolling in our optional violin making class, where you will complete making an instrument all the way from selecting tonewoods through finish work and set up. Celebrate your accomplishment at the Student Violin Showcase, held at the end of the academic year.
